Is the person photographing your Special Day qualified to do so?

My loyal and trusted friend Tom Flatcoat (FCRS) reminded me the other day of my Cousin's Wedding which I attended as a guest a number of years ago. The photographers (there were 2) appeared to have little control and seemed totally at a loss when dealing with even simple groups (I was a guest and stayed well and truly in the background). My Aunt (the Groom's Mother) was also perplexed - "You seem very familiar" she said to one of the photographers "I should be - I am your Postman" he said. This is a true story!

I am a full time Master Photographer and a professionally qualified member of the British Institute of Professional Photography (LBIPP) and Master Photographers Association (MPA) - the qualification structure and entrance criteria for both of these organisations are both strict and demanding - Photographers are strictly prohibited from using the logos or implied association with these bodies unless qualified.

It has been suggested that my trusty friend Tom should join one of these organisations - the truth however is that whilst Tom may well be superb in his promotional/marketing role - he could not take a photograph to save his life - let loose at a wedding he would just simple run around aimlessly socialising with the guests.

Surely there are Societies for Wanabee Professional Photographers, that for a fee, will allow aspiring photographers (and perhaps Thomas Flatcoat ) to use and promote themselves using that organisations logos without the necessity of being qualified you may ask? Yes there are, but would you risk the memories of your special day to someone who may well be gaining skills at your expense over the weekend and doing their normal job during the week?

Tom will be sticking to what he is good at and leaving the photography to me - David Court.
